Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) is a standardized test which is required for gaining teaching credentials in the state. This test is developed jointly by the evaluation systems group of Pearson and Michigan educators. It is a requirement for gaining certifications such as basic skills, elementary level, secondary level teachers and endorsements.

Eligibility-

This test is taken by candidates who are willing to gain teacher certification in the state. One has to pass the basic skills test, one or more subject tests and satisfy other requirements according to his/her certification type.

Test Overview-

MTTC tests can be categorized into two classes-

Basic Skills test: – This test is mandatory for all certifications. It consists of three test sections- reading, writing and mathematics. These test sections can be taken separately, however it is necessary to pass all the three sections for passing this test.

Subject Tests: – These are the tests of specific subject areas like biology, economics, chemistry, fine arts, geography, history, journalism, agricultural education etc. One has to select one or more subject area tests according to the requirement of his/her certification.

Test Format-

MTTC is a criterion referenced test. The examinee is evaluated in respect to a fixed standard instead of performance of other examinees. It has an objective pattern, so this test consists of multiple choice questions. There may also be constructed response questions in some tests like in the language tests.

Marking Scheme-

The scores are awarded in a scale of 100 to 300. The passing score is 220. There is no negative marking in any of these tests.

Schedule-

These tests are conducted on fixed dates of a year. It is available in both paper based and computer based testing mode. The registrations can be done through internet, mail and telephone and are available in regular, late and emergency periods. U.S. mail registration is available only in regular and late periods while registration through telephone can be done only in emergency periods.

Exam Fees-

The fees for basic skills test and first subject test are $48 and $73 respectively. Each additional subject area test costs $59. There are extra charges for late registration, emergency registration, change of registration, rescoring, addition of tests, clearing an account and order of study guides.
