Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET) is a standardized test developed and administered by Educational Resources Incorporated (ERI). Its results are utilized by the colleges and universities for admission into their health occupational courses. This test serves as a reliable criterion and make able to select suitable candidates for the courses. It has been useful in identifying abilities and weaknesses of the candidates. This has significantly reduced dropout rate from health courses.
Eligibility-
This test is for admission into health occupational courses. These courses are of graduate degree or certificate level.
Test Overview-
HOBET test consists of seven sections- essential mathematics, science reading comprehension, written expression, stress level profile, basic science concepts & vocabulary, learning styles, and assessment taking skills. The content area of essential mathematics skills section includes number systems, algebraic operations, arithmetic operations and equations. The science reading comprehension section is based on reading comprehension, analysis, conclusions, critical thinking and reading speed. The knowledge of grammar, punctuations, spellings and language arts is tested in written expression section. The stress level profile section assesses an individual’s behavior in family, office and other social environments and his/her ability to handle stress. The knowledge of scientific terminology is tested in basic science concepts & vocabulary section. The learning style section judges how the individual learn and perceive things. The assessment taking skills section examines ability to face standard tests like are taken while a health occupational coursework.
Test Format-
There are multiple choice questions in HOBET. The test is administered in either of three formats- paper & pencil, software or internet based. It depends on a testing center which mode of testing it adopts. The time for administering this test is 3 hours. Mostly computer based testing is preferred.
Marking Scheme-
Each section is individually scored. The scores of essential mathematics and reading comprehension sections are most crucial. There is no criterion for pass or fail in the exam. The colleges themselves decide acceptable scores for them. Some of the colleges may require taking this test under their own administration, while others accept scores of HOBET administered in different college on basis of a written permission.
Schedule-
The candidates need to contact their desired colleges for taking HOBET. The colleges may conduct this test on fixed dates or can have flexible dates as well. The test is normally conducted keeping in consideration that when its results will be required. The institutions may allow one or more retests depending on their choice.
Exam Fees-
The fee for taking HOBET test varies from college to college. It can be as high as $50.
